And in the end, even though he had been wronged again and again by his former master, he is unable to get his revenge when not him but another soldier kills Ned while he dies as a result of wounds inflicted upon him by Ned. Robert feels avenged and says that â€Å"it’s better so†, perhaps because the way the things played out ensured that Robert was n ot guilty of murdering his own brother. Once again the readers witness the irony of the situation since even though he had been wronged by Ned in so many ways Robert continues to think of him as his brother. While The Brothers is full of irony, other stories in the collection also have their ironic moments. In A Modern Cinderella, the biggest irony is perhaps the fact that the girls lose their father on the happiest day of their life. Just a few hours after he accepts Phillips proposal to allow Laura to marry him, he is found dead in his garden. Alcott further brings out this irony in announcing the death. She refers to fields of grain and ripening fruits, all of which are symbols of prosperity and life and then mentions almost offhandedly that â€Å"In the silence of the night a greater Reaper had passed by†¦leaving only tender memories† (18). In Debby’s Debut, we witness the happy irony of Debby falling in love with the poor Mr. Evans despite her aunt’s best efforts to get her married to the rich Leavenworth. Also, while Aunt Pen tries to educate her niece in the sophisticated ways of the rich society, ironically it is Debby’s simple and honest demeanor which attracts Leavenworth to her. The stories also make ample use of symbols, metaphors and imagery to get the message across. A Modern Cinderella starts with a description of the sisters’ house and its surrounding and refers to the trees as â€Å"patriarchal elms stood sentinel upon the lawn, as they had stood almost a century ago† (3), just as their fathers â€Å"paternal love †¦ had been its strength and stay† (20). The problems facing Nan as she braves the house work all is best captured by the words â€Å"domestic purgatory†¦, kitchen† (4). Later, when it is obvious that Nan has fallen in love with John, the grove which she had visited since childhood to enjoy its solitude no longer felt deserted and â€Å"all things seemed to wear one shape†(13), an obvious reference to John. Just before announcing the death of their father, Alcott tells the readers the good news of Laura’s impending engagement. A little later, John and Nan walk out into the garden to look for Nan’s father. As they are walking down the garden, Alcott describes the scenery as â€Å"Fields of yellow grain were waving on the hill-side, and sere corn blades rustled in the wind, from the orchard came the scent of ripening fruit, and all the garden-plots lay ready to yield up their humble offerings to their masters hand† (18). These words serve a dual purpose at this point of the story. Besides bringing out the irony of the old man’s death, they also refer to the happiness felt by the young lovers in wake of the recently receive good news. Although the sisters always had a close bond, the death of their father brought them closer and prepared them for the long life that lay in front of them. Alcott has described this formation of a close bond between the sisters using the metaphor â€Å"the soil was made ready, and in the depth of winter the good seed was sown, was watered with many tears, and soon sprang up green with a promise of a harvest for their after years† (20). As the girls grew closer and became more responsible, their actions are described as â€Å"herbs of grace† (21). Time heals all wounds and by spring the girls had taken control of their lives and moved on after their father’s death. This aptly symbolized as â€Å"spring cleaning†. In Debby’ Debut, the contrast between old age and youth is brought out by the fact that while even though they had both had the same exhausting journey, Aunt Pen chose to sleep earl while Debby was forced to be patient even though she wanted to play at the beach. Also, while Debby rose early, Aunt Pen continued to sleep till much later. The rising sun is an apt symbol for Debby’s youth and her soon to foll ow debut. The youngsters at the summer watering hole had completely different dispositions in the privacy of their home but took on more polished roles in the each other company. This change in their personalities is captured by Alcott using the words â€Å"actors and actresses† to refer to the young crowd. In the Brothers, the various injustices faced by Robert are compared with Michael Angelo’s bronze prisoner. Also, Robert refused to adopt the last name of his masters but later took Faith’s last name as a sign of his respect for the woman who gave him a second life free of vengeful thoughts. Another symbol is Alcott’s reference to the fact that â€Å"all colored men are called boys†. Robert is described as a twenty five year old strong-limbed and manly person. Yet he is referred to as a â€Å"boy† because of his race. As Patterson points out, this confuses his identity, just as his being of mixed race results in him belonging to neither race. Similarly, being a contraband â€Å"he is neither a slave nor free† (Patterson para 5). By referring to this manly person as â€Å"boy†, Alcott symbolizes the confused nature of his identity. Thus Alcott has made ample use of imagery, symbols and metaphors to get across her message in her stories. Alcott also had a tendency to borrow heavily from her own life and experiences and this lends the realism to her stories. A Modern Cinderella, tells the story of three sisters. As pointed out by Keyser, this sister theme is repeated over and over again Alcott’s writing. Since 1945 America has been the dominant force in the UN. In the Korean War of 1950-1953 fought under the United Nations Joint Command, 90% of all army personnel, 93% of air power and 86% of naval power came from the US (UNDP, 2001). Washington is supposed to provide 22% of the UN budget, but has often withheld huge sums owed in order to force compliance with its wishes. These arrears currently stand at $1.3 billion (UNDP, 2001). United Nations’ peacekeeping interventions are often controversial affairs and lay bare the UN’s inability to keep the peace when there is no peace to keep. The Security Council has been forced to explicitly accept responsibility for failing to prevent the 1994 genocide in Rwanda in which 800,000 people were killed. On the eve of the atrocities most of the 2,500 peacekeepers were withdrawn after the deaths of 10 Belgian soldiers, thereby sending a green light to the killers. Moreover much of the subsequent UN aid was channeled through former Rwandan government officials who controlled refugee camps in Congo. (FAO, 2001). Many of these camp leaders were implicated in the campaign of genocide. Similarly, the UN was widely criticized for rehabilitating the forces of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, even going so far as to provide them with funds for the 1993 election (UNCTAD, 2006). This policy suited both the US and China, both of which wanted to shore up any opposition to Vietnam. Then there is the shame of Srebrenica in Bosnia in 1995, where Serb forces overran a so-called UN safe area, butchering 7,000 men and boys in Europe's worst massacre since World War Two (UNCTAD, 2006). UN Secretary General Kofi Annan later wrung his hands and concluded that "peacekeepers must never again be deployed into an environment in which there is no ceasefire or peace agreement" (SMH, 15/7/07). In a sick postscript, the perpetrators of this massacre, Bosnian-Serb leader Karadzic and General Mladic are still in hiding, having thwarted the UN's attempts to bring them before the International Court of Justice at The Hague (SMH, 15/7/07). It is significant that Paris speaks to Juliet's father before he ever shows her any indication of his feelings, and apparently before he even gets to know her particularly well. Lady Capulet, for her part, offers her entire support to her husband's plan for their daughter, and begins to put pressure on Juliet to think about Paris as a husband before Juliet begins to think about marriage at all on her own. Juliet even says to Lady Capulet in scene 3 how important her influence is to her in this matter: "I'll look to like, looking liking move; / But no more deep will I endart mine eye / Than your consent gives strength to make it fly.

William Shakespeare came from a modest start but finished life living in the largest house in Stratford-upon-Avon, with a coat of arms and a series of shrewd business investments to his name. So was William Shakespeare a businessman, as well as a writer? Shakespeare the Businessman Jayne Archer, a lecturer in Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Aberystwyth University has uncovered information from historical archives that point to Shakespeare being a shrewd and ruthless businessman. With her colleagues Howard Thomas and Richard Marggraf Turley, Archer discovered documents that showed Shakespeare to be a grain merchant and property owner whose practices caused some controversy in his lifetime. The academics believe that much of Shakespeare’s business savvy and company ventures have been obscured by our romantic view of him as a creative genius who made his money through acting and writing plays. The idea that Shakespeare gave the world such wonderful narratives, language, and all-around entertainment, makes it difficult or uncomfortable to consider that he was motivated by his own self-interest. Ruthless Businessman Shakespeare was a grain merchant and property owner and for over 15 years he bought and stored grain, malt, and barley and then sold it on to his neighbors at inflated prices. In the late 16th and early 17th  centuries, a blight of bad weather gripped England. The cold and rain resulted in poor harvests and consequently famine. This period was referred to as the ‘Little Ice Age’. Shakespeare was under investigation for tax evasion and in 1598 he was prosecuted for hoarding grain at a time when food was scarce. This is an uncomfortable truth for Shakespeare lovers but in the context of his life, times were hard and he was providing for his family who would have had no welfare state to fall back on in times of need. However, it is documented that Shakespeare pursued those who could not pay him for the food he provided and used the money to further his own money-lending activities. It was perhaps galling for those neighbors when he came back from London and brought his lavish family home, New Place. Links to Plays One could argue that he did not do this without a conscience and that perhaps this is demonstrated in the way he portrayed some of the characters in his plays. Shylock: Shakespeare’s portrayal of the moneylender Shylock in The Merchant of Venice is not a kind one. Perhaps Shylock personifies Shakespeare’s own self-loathing for his profession? Shylock is eventually humiliated for his greed as a money lender and all that he owns is stripped from him. Perhaps with the authorities pursuing him, this was a real fear for Shakespeare?Lear: King Lear is set at a time of famine and Lear’s decision to divide his land between his daughters would have impacted on the distribution of food. This may reflect a preoccupation with the powers that be and their ability to impact the lives of their citizens to the point of what they put in their bodies.Coriolanus:  The play Coriolanus is set in Rome at a time of famine and the riots that ensue would have reflected the peasants uprising in 1607 in the Midlands where Shakespeare lived. Shakespeare’s fear of hunger may have been a major motivation for him. Hard Times Shakespeare saw his own father fall on hard times and as a result, some of his siblings did not receive the same education that he did. He would have understood how wealth and all its trappings can very quickly be taken away. At the same time, he would surely have understood how lucky he was to have received the education he did in order to become the savvy businessman and famous actor and writer he became. As a result, he was able to provide for his family. Shakespeare’s original funeral monument at Holy Trinity Church was a bag of grain which shows that he was also famous for this work during his lifetime as well as his writing. In the 18​th ​century, the bag of grain was replaced by a pillow with a quill on it.​ This more literary depiction of Shakespeare is the one that we prefer to remember but perhaps without the economic successes in his lifetime relating to grain, Shakespeare would not have been able to support his family and pursue his dream of being a writer and actor?
